Summer School Graduates Receive Diplomas
In a special ceremony on July 19, students from Independence High School, Rio Rancho High School and Cleveland High School who stayed the course and completed the requirements for graduation received their hard-earned diplomas.
For a variety of reasons, not all students are able to finish their course requirements in time for commencement ceremonies in May. But instead of dropping out, these dedicated students attended summer classes at RRPS's Secondary Learning Center qualified for a high school sheepskin from their home school. Thirteen of the sixteen students who qualified participated in the intimate graduation ceremony attended by family and friends.
Secondary Learning Center principal David Latham hosted the ceremony, which was also attended by new Independence High principal Dr. Susan Carley and by RRPS School Board President Don Schlichte and Vice-President Catherine Cullen. The commencement speaker, RRPS Chief of Staff Gary Tripp, invited the students to whip out their cell phones and send a text thanking friends and family for their help and support.
During his speech he also encouraged the students to go into the audience to personally thank parents and family members.
Approximately 1,100 students earned diplomas at Rio Rancho's four high schools in 2016. The sixteen summer school graduates include 13 from Independence High, two from Cleveland High, and one from Rio Rancho High.
