PROJECT Unify & Special Olympics
Special Olympics Project UNIFY

Special Olympics Project UNIFY® is an education-based program that uses the sports and education initiatives of Special Olympics to activate youth to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change – fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities. But it is much more.

Project UNIFY is acceptance. Project UNIFY is unity. Project UNIFY is youth driven. Project UNIFY is friendship. Project UNIFY is fun.

Project UNIFY is a U.S. national project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is much more than a re-naming of existing school-based programs; rather, it is an innovative response to the unequivocal research that shows Special Olympics local programming can contribute to eradicating the social and environmental walls to inclusion.

Special Olympics believes that through sports young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities. Special Olympics Project UNIFY® incorporates Special Olympics sports and related activities; however, Project UNIFY is committed to a movement advocating for youth as change agents now and in the future.

Project UNIFY initiatives include a host of core activities, like Spread the Word to End the Word®, Unified Sports®, Get Into It®, Young Athletes® and more. With 38 active U.S. State programs, Project UNIFY is currently featured in over 1,700 schools and engaging more than 600,000 young people.

A Catalyst for Change

The magic of Project UNIFY is manifested in the inclusive friendships formed as youth with and without intellectual disabilities work together as leaders to create communities of caring and respect. Youth become core leaders in their school communities using Unified Sports® and Spread the Word to End the Word® as the catalyst for fostering positive school climates.

Are you ready to join our movement? Find a Special Olympics Program in your neighborhood and see how you can begin to change your school and community. Or visit our Resources Homepage for more information on getting involved with Special Olympics Project UNIFY.

Transition EXPO 2015
February 25th, 2015
9am-12pm
CHS Concert Hall and Lobby

Transition Expo 2015

Transition from high school to the adult world can be challenging for anyone. For students with exceptional needs and their families, the transition from the school setting to their adult life takes even more preparation. While students are in school they receive instruction, support services, therapies, and transportation from a single source. When they eventually exit the public school system, there are major changes. In the adult world, services for individuals with disabilities are handled through a variety of agencies, organizations, and providers. Students and their families can begin to take a proactive approach to ensure a more successful transition into their adult life.

To help students who have transitional need and their families learn more about transition to adult life, Cleveland High school will host Rio Rancho Public School’s 4th Annual Transition EXPO on February 25th from 9:00-12:00 PM in our Concert Hall and Lobby. Interested students, families, and others throughout Rio Rancho, Sandoval County, and beyond are invited to make valuable face-to-face contacts with the many resources, agencies, and adult services providers available for a successful transition from public school to the adult world.

Since early planning is crucial, we encourage families with students as young as pre-k to attend the EXPO. Learning to navigate the crowded sea of adult services is a huge factor in the transition from high school to the adult world. The most successful families I’ve worked with are those who start the process as soon as their child is identified as having a disability. However, it’s never too late to start making these important contacts!
The EXPO is free and open to the public. We’ll provide any updates prior to the event through the RRPS website.
